THE NECESSITY OF PURPOSE

THE NECESSITY OF PURPOSE

“Do not lose hold of your dreams or aspirations. For if you do, you may still exist but you have ceased to live”

– Henry David Thoreau

AMERICAN POET, PHILOSOPHER, ABOLITIONIST AND SURVEYOR

What is your true essence? Why do you exist? Why are you a citizen of your country? Why are you alive in this age and time? What are you good at? What is your passion? What potentials do you have?

Giving honest answers to these questions will give you an idea of your purpose without which you cannot attain success. The discovery of purpose is an inevitable prerequisite to the achievement of outstanding and long-lasting success. You are not an accident, or product of a one night stand. Your birth and existence was pre-planned by God before you took your first breath on this planet. You may choose your career, your spouse, your hobbies and many parts of your life but you don’t get to choose your purpose.Your purpose is not something you determine, it is something you discover. You are on this planet for a purpose. Find it. And when you do, invest your life and resources completely in its fulfillment.

In today’s world of multiple and overwhelming options and distractions people easily give up their dreams to pursue the trappings of success. Very few people realize that their money and fulfillment is in their mission. The only way to swim with the sharks of life without being eaten alive is to play in your area of strengths not weaknesses. What are your dreams and dominant aspirations? What would you do with your life if it were impossible for you to fail? If your doctor told you today that you had one month left to live and you have unlimited financial, material and human resources at your disposal what will you do with that one month? If what you will do is not what you are doing now, you are not just wasting your time; you are wasting your life. What is that thing that you can’t stop thinking about? What thoughts keep you awake in the night?

My encouragement to you is, never give up something that you can’t go a day without thinking about. In today’s world most people’s work – or better still job – is their number one cause of stress. They simply work at jobs they have no passion for, until they suddenly drop dead on the job. Research tells us the highest rate of suicide happen on Monday mornings; after having a fulfilling weekend doing what they love and spending time with the people they love, most people wake up on Mondays only to realize they have to go back to the job that takes away their joy, inner peace and sense of fulfillment. Don’t let that happen to you. Those who refuse to leave their comfort zone because of fear will one day end up in tears of what might have been if they had taken a leap of faith and faced their fears.

Have you ever asked yourself what our world would be like today if people like Nelson Mandela, E.A. Adeboye, Mother Theresa, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates had ignored their dreams to work for a high paying job. Don’t sacrifice your dreams and desires on the altar of temporary comfort, pleasure and complacency. Don’t end your life with the regrets of what could have been if you had left your comfort zone and lived your life in the pursuit of your dreams and dominant aspiration. Don’t spend your whole life climbing the “cooperate ladder” only to realize at age forty or fifty that your ladder was leaning on the wrong wall. Steve Jobs said, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drown out your own inner voice”
